Phoenix, Ariz.
(AP) The city of Phoenix plans to close two of its borders with Nevada and Arizona, in a move that could result in fewer jobs and fewer housing units.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton announced Friday the city would close the south border at Pima-Maricopa International Airport and the north border at I-10 in Phoenix.
The announcement comes after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security told Arizona Gov.
Doug Ducey last month that the city of about 11,000 people could be forced to move its offices from Phoenix to Salt Lake City, where it has been for more than 20 years.
Ducey and Stanton said they want to work together to create jobs and economic growth in the two states.DHS Secretary Ryan Sullivan told the Arizona House of Representatives on Tuesday that Phoenix would be the first city to begin the process of closing its border crossings.
Sullivan said Phoenix’s closure could take place within the next year.
